Title: METT and SETT CD

AUTHORS(s): PaulEkman, Ph.D.
Paul Ekman, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychology, in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California Medical School, San Francisco. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Chicago and New York University. He received his Ph.D. from Adelphi University in 1958 after spending a year in clinical internship at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute, which is part of the University of California, San Francisco. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1958 and served as chief psychologist at Fort Dix New Jersey, 1958-1960. He returned to the University of California when he was discharged to begin a three-year postdoctoral research fellowship. When that ended he was supported by research grants he wrote, and in 1972 was appointed Professor of Psychology.

His interests have focused on two separate but related topics. He originally focused on nonverbal behavior, but by the middle 1960s focused more specifically on the expression and physiology of emotion. His second interest, dating from the same period of time is interpersonal deception.

He has received many honors, most notably the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award of the American Psychological Association in 1991, and an honorary doctor of humane letters from the University of Chicago in 1994.

The descriptions follow:

As clinicians we know that emotions are at the center of the work we do -- that they determine the meaning of experience, are at the heart of communication between us and our patients. We also know that emotions are often concealed from us and from our patients themselves, that they are often expressed fleetingly or show up at as barely perceptable facial expressions lasting less than 1/15th of a second.

Paul Ekman has been studying the face as a display of emotions for over 30 years. Although very influential in the mental health research communities (especially infant research), law enforcement agencies (catching liars), actors and animators (getting emotional expressions right), and although he has been recognized as one of the 100 most influential psychologists of the 20th century by the American Psychological Association, Paul Ekmans work is, oddly, almost unknown to clinicians. (His work came to my attention only because I read about it in a lengthy article a couple of years ago in the New Yorker magazine and then again in a full page article in last years NY Times Science Section.) PsyBC hopes to change this by offering these CDs.

Educational Objectives

Micro Expression Training Tool (METT)
Educational Objectives:
By using this CD you will learn to spot micro expressions of emotions displayed fleetingly on the face. And once you have learned to detect an expression lasting 1/15th of a second, the longer lasting emotion displays will be easy to spot.

Subtle Expression Training Tool (SETT)
Educational Objectives:
By using this CD you will learn to spot micro expressions of emotions displayed in subtle signs of facial expression that appear in just one region of the face: the brows, eyelids, cheeeks, nose or lips.

Note:
- There are no refunds for the CD once you have opened the package.
- This CD is for PCs only. At this point there is no version for the Macintosh.
- At this time, the METT/SETT CD can only be shipped within the continental United States.
