Empirical studies now show that Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) is as effective as Dialectical Behavior Therapy in the treatment of suicidality. Moreover, when compared with DBT and supportive therapy it was the only treatment demonstrated to improve reflective functioning.

“The Management of Affect Storms and Suicidality” conference is an opportunity to learn and discuss directly with Drs. Otto Kernberg, Frank Yeomans and JohnClarkin how to effectively manage affect storms and suicidality, two of the most challenging presentations of Borderline pathology. Also participating in the discussions will be senior colleagues in the Personality Disorders Institute, Drs. Pamela Foelsch, Catherine Haran, Judit Gordon-Lendvay and Ms Delaney.

Discussions will center on papers by Dr. Kernberg and Dr. Yeomans. The emphasis in the discussions will be on clinical material with senior colleagues at the institute presenting their experiences in clinical-life-as-lived with suicidal patients and/or patients exhibiting affect storms.

The papers will both elucidate some of the underlying theory that allows for a useful understanding of the origin and role of affect storms and provide practical clinical solutions for managing affect storms when they occur in the treatment process. Dr. Yeomans will present a Chapter from the just release revised treatment manual, Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality: Focusing on Object Relations (APA Press, 2006) that provides specific instruction on how to establish a treatment contract that is effective in managing suicidality and other destructive and treatment interfering behaviors. Dr. Clarkin will lead off the discussion providing an integrative framework for understanding and applying the clinical wisdom contained in these papers. Dr. Foelsch will moderate the discussion, ensuring that the three clinical panelists and the conference attendees will explore in-depth how to effectively manage these most difficult patient behaviors. All clinicians can benefit by the comprehensive theoretical understanding and specific therapeutic tools this course will provide.

Panelists: 3 clinician’s involved in both discussions, 1 ½ weeks on each topic.
- Jill Delaney, LCSW,
- Judit Gordon-Lenvay, MD,
- Catherine Haran, Psy.D.
